Hiroshima – unilateral nuclear disarmament – 2012Posted: November 9, 2012

The anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 is a reminder of the insanity of nuclear weapons as an instrument of international policy. It is simple to understand what PM David Lange said, “You cannot defend yourself with nuclear weapons”. To build one such bomb is useless and insane. To build a vast arsenal, and then develop the twisted theory of “nuclear deterrence” which is somehow used as justification, is a sign of an attempt to avoid moving away from the exploitative world which has produced those weapons.
For those who call for nuclear disarmament, it would do well to consider whether it is realistic to expect the international establishment to respond to calls for a diplomatic plan to eliminate such insanity. It is unlikely that any power establishment would adopt a plan which contradicts the philosophy of dominance at the heart of the hierarchical power structures which dominate our world.
Instead the peoples of the world working together as individuals and communities creatively organizing the nuclear free zone concept through to national and international levels, is a more promising way to untangle the insanity from our lives, a “global nuclear-free spring”.
