Chris Horne (letter 25 Nov) is correct to note that increased car transport, and associated increase in greenhouse gas emmessions, through Cobham Dr. to the new sports centre will be the primary effect of its location in Kilbirnie rather than near the Railway Station.
But was it an “error in judgment with respect to energy efficiency in the wider context” which led to its placement? The location is consistent with the WCC “airport master plan” which expects to see vastly increased air traffic over the next 10-20 years. Increased vehicular traffic of any kind to the Eastern suburbs will encourage building of tunnels, overpasses, and roads to the airport thus forwarding this plan.
It would seem the decision was more likely made out of a calculated desperation. Air traffic has long been known as the least fuel and carbon efficient method of transport and an economy based on it reflects the outmoded ideology of continued economic growth at just about any cost which forms the basis of the current global economy. It is doomed to collapse sooner or later and those dedicated to this ideology realize they must grasp at that fantasy now or never.
Mayor Wade-Brown wants to move Wellington into a new era of working toward a sustainable future. She will as a top priority need to confront this “airport master plan” and the mentality behind it if she is going to have any significant success.
Sincerely, Richard Keller
