“Urewera 4” verdict (2nd try) – 2012

09 May, 2012

The Editor, The Dominion Post, Wellington

Dear Sir;

Neither the prosecution’s decision not to retry the “Urewera Four” on the criminal gang charge, nor the verdict on fire arms charges are the main story in that affair.  The Oct 15, 2007 police raids at Ruatoki and around New Zealand were inspired by the so-called “war on terror” which has as main objective the spread of fear and creation of a climate of support for foreign policy led by war.  As such, the raids and the trial were primarily a political exercise.

The main question is, has the “war on terror” had the effect of raising people’s fear levels so that they accept the dire police spin on the evidence presented at the trial.  If so, we can expect further attempts to involve New Zealand more deeply in the USA’s world of endless wars.

Already in April we have had the decision to conduct training exercises here in New Zealand with USA military forces.  Is that based on an analysis that the New Zealand public is ready to accept participation in further USA wars?

Sincerely,  Richard Keller
