Refugee Crisis – war mongering?

The Editor,  The Dominion Post,  Wellington

Dear Editor:

The Syrian refugee crisis is an immediate concern of unprecedented scale. But it is worrying that calls for stepped up war actions have arisen so soon amidst apparent concern for the refugees. Yesterday Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced his country would begin air strikes against targets in Syria. Also British PM David Cameron is considering extending air strikes to Syria to join the US coalition.

The main purpose of the 2003 Iraq invasion by the US government was to promote war as the primary means of conducting foreign policy. The mess that such a war policy created in Iraq and consequently throughout the Middle East is well known. Insurgent groups took their inspiration (and even many of their weapons!) from that intervention. Tony Abbot and David Cameron would know their proposed approach will just make things worse.

The question of ‘Why do Abbot and Cameron want to stir up more fighting and more refugees?’ is not a rhetorical question. It is a question we all should consider.

Sincerely,

Richard Keller
