“Elephant in the room” in regards to the airport runway business casePosted: October 20, 2015

The ‘airport runway case’ article on the front page of the Dom Post of Wednesday (14/10) mentions four items to be discussed in the business case which the airport will present to the Environment Court this month. But once again the airport leaves out the ‘elephant in the room’, namely that in the carbon constrained world of a sustainable future there will be a good bit less air travel than today. Increased fuel efficiently will never come close to the reductions in carbon emissions required of air travel.
What are the airport and most commentators including a supposedly green mayor afraid of? Is air travel too close to the bone in the carbon debate? If it doesn’t become central to the debate then all of Mayor Wade-Brown’s efforts promoting a forward looking green agenda will become lifeless and perhaps increasingly counterproductive.
