The Wellingtonian’s trolley bus editorial seems confused.Posted: October 22, 2015

The Wellingtonian’s editorial of 8/10 on trolley buses with its reference to Wellington being the last to use trolleys in “Oceania . . . and where vehicles drive on the left” seems confused. What does that have to do with anything? By the end of the editorial though it is clear that it was part of an effort to describe trolleys as “nostalgia”.
What the editorial failed to mention is that the use of trolleys is growing worldwide. And it also failed to mention the Wellington Regional Council’s (WRC) openly contradictory decision to plan for electric buses as a desired outcome (only by 2032, though!) and at the same time remove the all-electric trolleys long before their use-by-date.
In fact, this confused editorial masquerading as a justification of an illogical WRC decision does not give confidence that Wellington leadership is looking in the direction of a sustainable transport future: all the more reason to reverse the decision to remove the trolleys and keep them while Wellington is still struggling to find a forward vision.
