The airport company predictably uses rosy passenger projections in its analysis of economic benefits from the runway extension. But those projections are fantasy. A sustainable future will require less air travel, not more. Any improvement in fuel efficiency will never be enough by itself.
It is no surprise that the airport, acting as a company, projects confidence in its ability to increase profits, but that’s not much help in determining what is sustainable for the future. In that larger context, the runway extension is an act of desperation. Will the City Council decide to hide the desperation by cocooning itself inside this popular runway fantasy or is it ready to move on and open up to the future with a rejection of the extension?
