Will flag referendum loss be excuse for dumping John Key?

Dear Editor:

Why does it matter that the PM’s flag choice seems to be failing? Whether changed or not, the referendum process is a waste of money.

Perhaps there’s more politics than seems behind this referendum. When Nicky Hager’s book, Dirty Politics, forced the demotion of Judith Collins before the last election,  the hard right faction of the National Party would have been thrown into a panic and begun devising a plan to get Collins back into cabinet and into the leadership.

Perhaps this flag referendum was the plan: get Key into a position where he seemed discredited and give him a supposed reason to resign.  Perhaps it is the Collins faction that is playing up the worry so that a discredit the PM plan can be pushed along.
