The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month

The Editor,  The Dominion Post,  Wellington

11/11 2016

Dear Editor:

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – the armistice of WWI was signed. That’s the date we should be celebrating in New Zealand, an end to the slaughter of young men of all nationalities.

We must look back 100 years to realize it was empire, not freedom or independence, that was being fought for: one alliance of empires against another alliance of empires.  The government of the day of this British colony wanted to be an equal partner in the empire not independent of it.

To be celebrating New Zealand’s participation in empire wars 100 years later begs the question: What ‘empires’ in today’s form are we supporting now? Asking that question on 11/11 would help us get closer to the ANZAC reality and would be respectful of 11/11 and the men who were there.

Sincerely,

Richard Keller
