Walking and cycling?

Dear Editor:

I noticed the new bright red markers on the Southern Walkway this week picturing both walker and cycle and recalled the concern expressed recently about allowing mountain bikes onto town belt walking tracks.

Can anything be more fundamental to humans than walking?  Our evolutionary heritage, our diaspora from Africa, through to the foundationally positive effects on an individual’s health all illustrate the importance of walking.  Some might say that jogging and running are an over-the-top form of walking, but as long they are left to short bursts (sprints), and not take us over completely, as in marathons, they should be seen as part of ‘walking’, I’d have thought.

Cycles and mountain bikes are another matter perhaps left for discussion on another day.
