Trying to inject more honesty into the political discussion on poverty apparently is unforgiveable to a significant section of the body politic. That is what Metiria Turei was trying to do and was viciously attacked for it.
Note that in the polls immediately after her admission, the Greens were marginally up and Labour marginally down, just as expected. The Greens poll standing dipped only after she resigned and after Jacinda Ardern became leader of the Labour Party.
New Zealand politics is drowning in fear of reality and needs the kind of kick Metiria gave to help bring it, kicking and screaming probably, into the 21st century.
