Dear Editor:

New Plymouth Mayor Neil Holdom says not granting off-shore oil exploration licences was ‘a kick in the stomach’.   Why is there such surprize evident in those words?  Where has he been? It’s been known widely around the world for the last 40 years that the fossil fuel era was coming to an end.  Although there has been a majority in that time trying their best to deny it, the reality of climate change has finally forced the deniers to expose their desperation as a Post Truth Era has come into the main stream.

Of course there have been suggestions for a change to a renewable energy economy, but it’s very late for Taranaki to be complaining. Given the importance the oil and gas industry to Taranaki, Taranaki should have been leading that discussion.
