Air NZ calls for Govt mandates to drive sustainable fuel use – Newsroom

SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) is a fantasy.

The definition of the term will probably adjust over the years but as of now it is clearly GAS (‘grasping at straws’). Yes, thanks to ANZ (Air New Zealand) for suggesting ‘international aviation should be brought into the net zero 2050 commitment’, but that may open up a COW (can of worms) as the desperate hopes of today become increasingly seen as OC (overly challenging).

No, I’m not an aviation fuel scientist, but such sources can be found if one wants to look.

Marc Daalder on Newsroom discusses possible consequences for the new government (and all of us) of ignoring the Climate Change Commission’s advice.

My take is that the new government will not consider consequences.

The new government will make a priority of ‘policy bonfire’, or ‘clearing the table’ of anything like a Green policy (or Labour) without thinking of consequences. These consequences may come from anywhere. They may very well openly contradict themselves but they won’t care. Their voting base will generally be happy with that. What we are seeing is an example of a government which has grown out of a deep ‘desperation’, which is actually global not just NZ. Sometimes desperation grows after consequences happen; this time it is their reason for being, not the result. Unpredictable what will happen.

Rod Oram on Newsroom succinctly lays out the climate / trade challenges facing A/NZ

The new National led government will do what it can to avoid dealing with climate change and the emphasis on climate in the new EU free trade deal. There could be surprises in local and global discussions, especially if the newly independent Greens decide to tell it like it is.

It’s good that the EU is emphasizing climate in the free trade deal. But the National Government here will not accept that. They may wish to try to take advantage of the global reluctance to pursue the enormous changes necessary and drag the world in the direction of denial. A sort of reversed ‘pulling above its weight’ for denial.

I see the Climate Change Commision coming under enormous pressure from the incoming government. They will not hold back on the language. Perhaps even in practice shutting its voice down.

Govt taken to court for ignoring Climate Commission on ETS

Newsroom report from Marc Daalder says the lawyers group is saying the rejection of the Climate Commission recommendations was illegal as the law says the ETS must satisfy the Zero Carbon Act.

It is reasonable to name the Climate Change Minister in the suit, though bizarre in that the Climate Change Minister opposed the cabinet decision.

Is James Shaw now in a position that he should resign as Climate Change Minister?
Is the ETS now in a position to be viewed honestly as being more about ‘trading’ than about ‘climate action’?
Is New Zealand ready to honestly and openly admit that it is acting as a desperate, cringing country deserving of the ‘fossil award’ for the third time?

Climate Change Commission advice from Rod Oram on Newsroom

Rod Oram comes at this enduring problem from the direction of what the Climate Change Commision must do to improve its mandate. Lots of good comments and this is my take.

“A paradigm shift means the abandonment of the beliefs, values, facts and assumptions upon which you built everything. And if we shift our paradigm then everything we’ve done in the past becomes suspect at least. “
This quote from Dr William Rees, as copied by Warren, describes a very challenging scenario. It is not a new perspective, probably creeping into public consciousness 25 years ago, although it was well evidenced in the desperate reaction to it in the neo-liberal coups by the 80s, and now widely understood.

I describe this realization as ‘the post truth era where denial has become main stream’. It goes a long way to explain the craziness that abounds, the ‘deep state’ accusations, the insurrection in Washington, DC, the occupation of parliament with a riot in Wellington, Fox (so-called ) News. Social media is more of a means than a deep cause.

The real debate is churning in the collective, the collective subconscious, where the relative importance of avoiding the worst of the coming apocalypse by implementing these massive changes is compared to the desire to stay the same consumerist ‘who we are’ which has a centuries long tradition, including the colonialist history of this place. Effects of this churning popping into the political consciousness may surprize, and while it will not be led by ‘government’ or ‘commission’, that all contributes to the churning.

Labour cabinet overrides Climate Change Commission – report from Newsroom (Rod Oram)

Is it time for the Greens to show leadership and remove some of its support for the Labour Government? They voted ‘no’ on the 3Waters bill which failed to address the increased possibility of privatization. Surely it’s time to vote ‘no’ on Labour’s climate plan.

Dear Editor:

Your recent editorial on climate change action states that solutions from the Climate Change Commission must be ‘politically palatable’.  The difficulty in that representation is that climate change is not in essence a technical or political problem.
